Anatomic Characteristics of Mental Foramen and Anterior Loop of Mandibular Canal in a population of South IRAN : a cone-beam computed tomography study

Authors: not saved
Abstract:

Introduction: Regarding the anatomic variety in the anterior mandible it is necessary to obtain adequate information about the vital structures in this area to protect them in dental surgeries and preventing injuries that might occur afterwards. The aim of this study is to describe anatomic characteristics of mental foramen and anterior loop on CBCT images.  Materials and Methods: On CBCT images of 326 hemimandibles, opening angle of mental foramen, vertical distance from mental foramen to the mandibular inferior border, location of mental foramen in relation to nearby teeth and the length of the anterior loop were measured. Results: Anterior loop was present in 52.1% of hemimandibles. The mean exit angle of mental foramen was 42.72±10.82 degrees. The highest frequency of the location of mental foreman with respect to the adjacent teeth was between the first and second premolar and the lowest frequency was between canine and the first premolar as well as between the second premolar and the first molar. The mean distance from mental foreman to the mandibular lower border was 15±5.85 millimeters. The mean length of the anterior loop was estimated to be 3.92±1.17 millimeters. Conclusion: Regarding variations in anatomic characteristics of mental foramen and anterior loop, precise examinations of these vital structures are necessary to protect them during surgical procedures of mandible.

A cone-beam computed tomography study of apical and mental foramen’s location in mandibular premolars

Introduction: Knowledge of the internal anatomy of the tooth, apical foramen (AF) and mental foramen (MF) is considered a basic prerequisite before root canal surgical and non-surgical treatments. The aim this study is evaluation the distance and situation of AF & MF to anatomic apex of mandibular  premolar. Materials & Methods: In this cross-sectional study, CBCT images of mandibular p...

Assessment of Accessory Mental Foramen by Cone-Beam Computed Tomography

Introduction: Any foramen in the buccal surface of mandibular body that transfers mental nerve and vessels except mental foramen, is called Accessory Mental Foramen (AMF). The objective of this study was the determination of the AMF using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods:  this descriptive study was done on 180 CBCT projections which were selected by convenience samp...

Investigating Root Canal Number and Morphology of Mandibular Anterior Teeth Using Cone Beam Computed Tomography

Background and purpose: Root therapy will be successful if it is done based on a correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan with the knowledge of morphology and tooth anatomy, debridement, disinfection, and obturation of the entire root canal system. This study aimed to investigate the number and morphology of canals in root canals mandibular anterior using cone beam computed tomography (...

Prevalence of the Inferior Alveolar Nerve’s Anterior Loop and Mandibular Incisive Canal by Use of Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) in an Iranian Population.

Background and aim: Mental nerve injury is one of the challenges of implant surgeries in the anterior mandibular region, which leads to complications such as paresthesia of the lip and chin. The present study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of the Inferior Alveolar Nerve's (IAN) anterior loop and mandibular incisive canal by use of  CBCT. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive stud...
